This was our second year printing the invitations to the Cool Green Home Wrap Party. The annual contest and party orchestrated by the Montana Radio Company, gives contestants a chance to win over $115,000 in sustainable home products. This is just one example of how the MRC goes out of their way to support and grow local business while being an environmentally responsible member of the community. And they top it off by choosing a sustainable printing method for the event. The invitations were printed on chemical-free, 100% reclaimed cotton paper with recycled envelopes right here in missoula so very little energy and waste went into their production. For more information on the Cool Green Home mission go to www.coolgreenhomemissoula.com.

There are many things that wouldn’t exist and many people whose lives would be different without the influence of Steve Jobs and our humble Noteworthy is no exception. If there was no Apple … and no Mac before that, there certainly would be no Noteworthy.

Our family Mac began to shape the course of my life since my dad first brought it home in the mid 1980s. Whole days would pass in complete absorption while discovering the Ins and Outs of “MacPaint.” Twenty-five years and five Macs later, not much has changed, I am still passing most of my days “painting” on my Mac … thanks to you Steve Jobs for making it so much fun.

I never knew I would, but I do, I love everything about it, but I especially love this: … sitting shotgun on dark and frosty mornings, deep into autumn. The small patch of highway under the car’s beams unfurling before us. Thermos in hand, each sip of dark, satisfying coffee that rolls from my cup rests heavy on my tongue and the anticipation for the days hunt grows with each sip … will I see nothing all day but that flash of white_ hind legs kicking off into thick underbrush, or will I find myself standing in a perfect glade of pines, a mature buck standing frozen, broadside at 75 yards.
Growing up outside of Boston, the idea of going hunting frankly never occurred to me as something I might like to do. It wasn’t until after my first child was born, having lived in Montana for ten years, that I decided I wanted to provide my family with an unending supply of fresh, local, organic meat. This season marks my fifth year of heading out to one of our (not so) secret spots and though it is still 22 days away I am already visualizing a success_ my bag is packed, my rifle is sighted and my thermos is shiny and clean.

And in the coming days, I will certainly be heading to Black Coffee Roasters for a pound of The Hunt for good luck and because it accessorizes so well with the rest of my gear! www.blackcoffeeroastingco.com

Molly and Taylor somewhere in Montana, Opening Day 2009. I scored a nice little four point buck that day and had the rest of the season off.

Last Thursday Amy and I attended Facetime at the Missoula Art Museum, a.k.a. the MAM and had an exceptionally great time. Facetime put a new spin on your standard art auction/fundraiser by auctioning off works of art not yet created and even though I didn’t come away with any claim to a commissioned piece (though I did try … I’ll get you next time Jen Leutzinger!), I did come away with the attached fun photo booth pics.
The photo booth provided pro-bono for the event by the MT Photo Booth usually runs $950 for up to four hours and is a must-have for any modern wedding. The package includes; unlimited photobooth use, props, free prints for your guests, downloads of event photographs and an attendant. I can’t think of a better way to record the smiles and laughter of all your friends and family_ As you can see the booth definitely promotes a general feeling of merriment for all who use it. They have a super cute website too, check it out: themtphotobooth.com/

Ok, this wedding was in May, but it was a wonderfully busy summer so I am just getting around to sharing it with you now. I designed and printed these invitations for my friends Tanya & Kevin who in my mind are intrinsic Missoulians; outdoorsy, artsy and incredibly stylish all wrapped up in one cute little package. So you can imagine it was a lot of pressure. They had traveled together to Baja before, spent the week surfing at Los Cerritos and exploring the rugged desert landscape of Pescadero and left with a plan to be married there among friends. What was so perfect about this place was its odd similarity to Missoula (when we got to the house we were renting the neighbor’s car had Missoula plates); again, outdoorsy, artsy and stylish beyond its resources.

The invites included an invitation to a reception in Missoula, along with a smaller invitation to the ceremony in Baja and a response card for the reception. All printed on 100% cotton 300gsm Flourescent White Crane Lettra paired with Paper Bag Waste Not Paper envelopes.

It has been such a busy spring here at Noteworthy* and even though it is already May, the brides just keep coming. Not only have we been selling lots of great designs from our many fabulous albums, but our little Vandy has been chugging away, printing some really fabulous designs for our equally fabulous customers. I can’t help but love these invitations Amy designed, they are so Montana-chic. The chocolate brown printed on luxurious Ecru Crane Lettra is classic and elegant yet also has a country feel to it. Check them out…

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when one of our brides came to me with a print out of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book Flappers and Philosophers. She said: “I am getting married in Vegas and want my wedding invitation to look like the cover of this book”. The book is gorgeous. I just wasn’t sure if we could reproduce that look without being able to actually print metallics. We ended up printing black on gold Envelopments paper and using it as a backer for a breathtaking layered look. The actual invitation in the center was engraved by Crane & Co. on beautiful 100% cotton black paper. In order to cut costs a bit, all the enclosure pieces were flat printed in-house on the same gold paper as the backer, including the address labels. As a final touch the envelopes were hand written by our local calligrapher Ann Franke.

It has been a long snowy winter here in Missoula. And this morning like so many others, I awoke to snow coming down. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good snow day, especially if I get to take a few turns on the ski hill, but since it is March 5th and we’ve now had a few warm afternoons I am beginning to crave that smell of spring in the air. I haven’t had a whiff of it yet but I did startle a flock of 20 odd Robin Red Breasts in my driveway yesterday on their return trip from warmer climes. My desire for spring and rebirth and perhaps the necessity of finding all my tax documents got me doing a little spring cleaning in my office, where I stumbled upon these handmade Victorian Calling Cards which once belonged to a relative of my grandmother Myrn Pagels Thayer. Myrn had a pension for collecting and as a child of the Depression did not have the heart to throw anything away. From treasures to trash, her house in Chattam, New Jersey was packed to the crown molding with everything from Civil War era guns, buttons and postage stamp collections, to years and years of newspapers and stacks of immaculate tin cans. As a result of her unchecked hoarding and her growing dementia, Myrn’s house burned down in the late eighties when I was about twelve. These beautiful cards that some how found their way out before the inferno, never used, saved for decades and long forgotten in my grandmother’s house, remind me that even the simplest objects and gestures once considered customary and essential to proper social interaction, deserve more value and consideration than we give them today. I like the idea of using calling cards today, rather than “business cards”, of giving someone you’ve recently met a small token of your interest in them in hopes of gaining a friendship in return.

What a month! So far January has been a whirl wind. Noteworthy* has been busy with everything from taking year-end inventory and getting our taxes in order to showing off our wares at local wedding fairs and putting up new window displays. I’ve been to L.A. and back for the California Gift Show and before I’d even caught my breath I realized wedding season is in full swing and we are meeting with five brides a day choosing everything from Save-the Dates to monogrammed napkins and matchbooks. On top of all this, our new website has unofficially, in fact rather sneakily, gone live. Yup, it’s up. It may not be perfect (yet!), but here it is. Over the next few weeks, those of you who have discovered us, will see a lot of changes on this site. So bear with us while we get used to our new digs.

This wedding suite is hot off the press. Illustrated, designed and printed on Envelopment’s paper right here at Noteworthy*.
